Reducing a system by combining its tools and functions into one single peice allows for less clutter. This peice also provides more versatility and a sense of ownership by allowing the user to change the state of this device from one function to the next.

When used in the home, as the text states, things like this can fall under the category of organizing existing assests into a systematic function. This method allows one to condense clutter and organize in a way that provides less day to day cleaning up after ones self. A sense of discipline in organization allows day to day life to be less hectic and more relaxed.

-landscape as ruin-

During this past summer, working on a pavilion in downsville, we got well acquainted with some of the local residents. On our lunch break we would regularly go to the local gas station to eat. This place was the spot for regular locals to socialize and in so doing we had a few conservations with them and in the process found out about this beautiful ruin.

production or destruction of school property?

Should there be a penalty or fine for the destruction of our buildings amenities? As students we are given a building to aid us in the production and advancement of our projects and careers. When disrespect is shown to our given amenities, to what level should one be responsible? Should these amenities be viewed, rather as peices that aid in our production and only exist for our use and abuse?


Does our irresponsibility show disrespect to our janitorial staff?

studio culture:
Probably the most vivid memories that i have about studio deal with the interaction that often occurs between students of different levels. As a sophmore i remember the graduate students and the senior students giving advice about the project that we were working on at the time. When upper classmen take the time to talk with you about your project, give you advice and encourage you to spend time on your projects, theres a sense of motivation that you recieve. As a senior, in the fall studio, we had a project located in new york city and for our site model we decided to 3d print a large portion of lower manhattan and the design of our building. In the process of us doing this second year students took such an interest in the model that we would have them stop by just to see what else we had been working on. At the moment it made me consider how i felt as a sophmore talking to the senior and graduate students and in a way motivated me to show more interest in their work and encourage them to do the best they can.

one: object of sentimental value
When thinking of an object that holds sentimental value to our family i would have to use the phrase: object as house. When an artist creates a piece of artwork, it has sentimental value to his or her self because it was created by him or her. Our house, in the same way, holds sentimental value to our family because it was built almost entirely by my father. With previous experience in construction, the help of friends in their spare time, and only a mason to do brick work, my dad built our house. This not only made our home sentimental but also very inexpensive. He designed and fabricated every thing from the house to its interior furnishing.

When one thinks about the hallway, they automatically would think of a space that serves as the circulation between individual rooms and not giving in much more thought than that. The hallway though, can often be a space where memories are created, as it was for myself. The hallway was a place where i could play catch with my dad indoors, it was a place were i could span hot wheel car tracks from one end to the other and race cars up and down, etc.

While constructing our house my father was given a great deal of input by his father. That same knowledge was passed down to myself when my father decided to add an addition to our house.

While the current healthcare debate has many supporters, it also has a large number of people concerned about the changes it will bring. One concern is the possible decline in the quality of care we receive by medical professionals. With salaries limited by the government, fewer people will seek jobs in the medical field, in turn causing a decline in our quality of care. While i support the new healthcare plan, i do however feel that the majority of people are less willing to accept and make changes. We can all agree that change is needed, whether it be in a social, economical, or political area. The work of artist Benjamin Edwards touches on one of these debated changes, consumerism. According to www.tandempress.wisc.edu/gallery/edwards/edwards.htm "Painter Benjamin Edwards has spent the last several years exploring what he calls "the architecture of suburbia"---the structural and design forms found in strip malls, fast-food joints, gas stations, motels and familiar citadels of consumerism. Accompanying the architecture is what Edwards refers to as "the iconography of the roadway"---those commercial signs, symbols, colors and artificial elements juxtaposed with the natural scene or environment." While his paintings do not evoke a since of positivity or negativity towards consumerism, in myself, it still touches its significance in our life. One of the core issues related toward being environmentally conscious, is the idea that we as Americans consume more than needed. Change is needed, but without a push from those in the world that hold influence, change will never occur. One of the best ways to stimulate change, is by educating the youth of our country. Musicians and actors hold some of the most influence to these people, and by using their talents, change can occur. The popularity of these musicians, such as lady gaga, could influence their listeners to activate this change.
